Compost for FlowersDartmouth composts about 400 tons of food waste each year. Composting sites are mainly in the dining areas, including Courtyard Café, '53 Commons, and the Hanover Inn. As Dartmouth improves its recycling and composting rate, it diverts more trash from the landfill.

Currently, Dartmouth only composts food waste. Food waste is collected by Dartmouth Dining Service staff and FO&M custodians, and the Dartmouth Recycles crew transports it to a Compost Compactor. Our waste hauler then transports the compactor with the food waste to the Lebanon Landfill where it is placed in windrows for composting. The composted material is then spread as a top layer over landfill areas.
