Educators embrace the concept of Universal Design for Classroom Instruction (UDI) in the abstract because it acknowledges the diversity of learning profiles they are likely to encounter in any classroom, but how can they actually implement those principles in their own settings? This presentation offers 10 research-based practices that exemplify UDI and that have been proven to be effective at Landmark College, which serves students who have struggled in traditional teacher-centered classrooms.

About Linda Hecker

Linda Hecker has taught at Landmark College since its founding in 1985. Appointed Director of Educational Services in 2001, she has overseen tutorial and teacher training programs, taught English, study skills, and music classes, and served as an academic advisor and academic dean. She received her B.A. from Brandeis University and her M.Ed from the University of Hartford. She frequently presents workshops and teacher training programs and has published several articles, most of them focusing on the benefits of assistive technology to students with learning challenges.

About Lorri LaMagdelaine

Lorri LaMagdelaine, M.Ed., is a Trainer/Consultant with the National Institute at Landmark College. For over ten years, she has worked with college students with learning disabilities and/or AD/HD as both a Learning Specialist and administrator within Disability Services. Specific areas of expertise include interpretation of psycho-educational assessments applied to individual learning needs and disability law in relation to classroom accommodations. Ms. LaMagdelaine has conducted learning strategies workshops on a variety of topics and privately tutors students with learning disabilities in study skills with emphasis on individual learning styles. She received her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and her B.A. in Psychology from Westfield State College, Westfield, MA.
