CRUEL AND UNUSUAL is the story of five transgender women, interwoven with commentary by lawyers and prison custodians who provide enlightening discourse on the dangers that transgender inmates face. As prison authorities refuse to recognize Gender Identity Disorder as a legitimate medical condition, the bodies of the convicted are subjected to the external violence of those around them as well as the internal turmoil of hormonal change that effects basic, everyday functioning. Eye-opening and caustic in its depiction of the blatant discrimination transgender people endure, this documentary will leave you with much to debate about our paths of punishment.
