Dartmouth's first-year writing courses prepare students to engage fully with their intellectual work in every discipline. In order to provide a solid foundation for that work, Dartmouth requires students to take two writing courses in their first year: Writing 2-3 or Writing 5, and the First-Year Seminar. Although some students are exempted from the English requirement, all students are required to take the First-Year Seminar.
