In this faculty spotlight, Professor Aden Evens attempts to define “new media” as a concept and provides a brief introduction to his research. Challenging the modern rhetoric surrounding digital technologies, Evens attempts to explain why he remains skeptical of these new forms of communication despite current widespread “hype.” This unique perspective on Dartmouth’s newest field of academic study raises some serious questions regarding the way in which new media will affect human behavior in the classroom and throughout our society as a whole.

Biography of Aden Evens
Aden Evens researches the phenomenology and aesthetics of the digital. His graduate work in philosophy and cultural theory led to a book on music and technologies of sound, Sound Ideas, published in 2005. His current project examines the ways in which computers both promote and inhibit creativity. He teaches new media studies and theory in the English Department at Dartmouth College.
Aden also finds time to play with digital media. He muses on social interaction in World of Warcraft (see video, above).
Aden has also released a couple of recordings of electroacoustic music under the band name, "re:".
