1. Who can use the shop?
The Woodshop is open to enrolled Dartmouth undergraduate and graduate students as well as Dartmouth faculty.
2. Do I need experience?
No prior experience is necessary, but attendance at one two-hour safety class is required for the use of power tools and machinery in the woodworking shop. Several sessions are offered each term. Register at the Hopkins Center box office. The schedule for safety classes is posted on the Student Workshops Website, in the Hopkins Center Student Workshops Blitz Bulletin, and on the display board next to the Hopkins Center Box Office. Fee: $5
3. Where is the shop?
The Woodshop is located in Room 62 on the lower level of the Hopkins Center.
4. When is it open?
Fall, Winter, Spring:
Summer: Monday - Friday 1 PM - 5 PM
5. How much does it cost?
The Hopkins Center Student Workshops require a shop fee of $10/term or $25/year for students and $40/term or $100/year for faculty. This fee covers the use of the jewelry, wood and pottery shops and can be charged to DASH. Users must also pay for their materials on the day they are used.
6. What is available in the Woodshop?
The Woodworking Shop offers facilities and instruction in furniture design and construction as well as other work in wood. Available here for student use are tools and machinery for cutting, planing, shaping, and boring all materials associated with woodworking, a spray booth-equipped finishing room, and facilities for matting and framing of pictures, posters, prints, and paintings. There is also an extensive library with texts and periodicals relating to furniture design and construction as well as general issues in the history of furniture and architecture. Students are encouraged to use the woodshop for any independent woodworking project of interest to them.
7. How long will a project take?
This depends on the project and how much time you want to spend in the studio.
8. Who runs the Woodshop?
Greg Elder directs the Woodshop and is assisted by several other instructors. Instructors are always on hand to assist each student individually with their projects.
