2009-2010 PROGRAM TIMELINE

FALL TERM 2009:

September

  • September 22 (Tuesday): Convocation / Inauguration
  • September 23 (Wednesday): Fall term classes begin at 7:45 AM
  • September 25 (Friday): Deadline for sponsors to submit Round One project descriptions.
 

October

  • October 7 (Wednesday): Internship Information Session, students receive
    information on opportunities and application process and begin contacting
    sponsors to set up interviews.
  • October 8-23 (Thursday, Friday): Sponsors (and assistant sponsors) conduct interviews with prospective interns.
  • October 23 (Friday): Sponsor deadline to submit top intern choices for Round One.
  • October 23-24 (Friday-Saturday): Homecoming Weekend
  • October 30 (Friday): Deadline for Round Two Project Descriptions.

November

  • November 2 (Monday): Notification of Round One matches.
  • November 4 - November 12: Winter term course election period.
  • November 5 (Thursday): Round 2 Opportunity information available – Students begin contacting sponsors with Round Two internships.
  • November 5 – November 20: Sponsors (and assistant sponsors) conduct interviews with prospective interns.
  • November 20 (Friday): Sponsor and student deadline to submit top intern/internship choices for Round Two.
  • November 24 (Tuesday): Thanksgiving recess begins at 5:50 PM
  • November 30 (Monday): Notification of Round Two matches.

Note: Before the end of Fall Term, each sponsor, assistant sponsor and intern triad (or pair) should meet for a pre-internship meeting to discuss time commitments, establish initial expectations and identify a firm January start date. This first meeting has proved to be very important to insuring a successful internship “launch”. Group interns on a project should try to meet together with their sponsor.

December

  • December 2 (Wednesday): Fall term classes end at 5:20 PM
  • December 3-4 (Thursday-Friday): Pre-Examination Break
  • December 4 (Friday): Final day, prior to the start of Winter classes, to make changes in Winter term course elections.
  • December 5 (Saturday): Final examinations begin.
  • December 9 (Wednesday): Final examinations end.

WINTER TERM 2010:

January

  • January 4 (Monday): Winter term classes begin.
  • Early January TBA: WISP Intern Orientation Session.
  • Late January TBA: WISP Intern Roundtable to share initial internship experiences.
  • January 18 (Monday): Martin Luther King Jr. day - classes moved to x-periods except 3A classes to 3B on Tuesday; laboratories meet as scheduled.

January TBA: Orientation dinner/discussion for new sponsors, assistant sponsors and anyone wishing a refresher.

February

  • February 10 – 18: Spring Term Course Selections.
  • February 12 (Friday): Carnival holiday (Classes moved to x-periods.)

End-February: Prior to end of term final exams, sponsor-intern check-in to review and/or adjust expectations and responsibilities, give feedback, set some goals for spring term. Sponsors are encouraged to share this review with WISP office.

March

  • March 9 (Tuesday): Winter term classes end at 5:50 p.m.; start of Pre-Examination Break.
  • March 12 (Friday): Final examinations begin.
  • March 16 (Tuesday): Final examinations end.

SPRING TERM 2010:

March

  • March 29 (Monday): Spring term classes begin.
  • March 29 (Monday): Internships resume this week. Getting re-established with your intern this week will help her prioritize the internship. Set a new work schedule.

April

  • Begin to work with intern on poster content and presentation.
  • WISP Poster preparation session for interns. Date and location TBA.

May

  • May 7 (Friday): Deadline for intern submission of symposium poster titles.
  • Note: Sponsors set interim goals for review of intern poster content and coach interns with practice presentations.
  • May 20 (Thursday): Wetterhahn Science Poster Symposium, keynote talk and student poster session.
  • May 21 (Friday): Second day - open poster viewing.
  • May 31 (Monday): Memorial Day Holiday.

June

  • June 2 (Wednesday): Spring term classes end at 5:50 p.m.; start of Pre-Examination Break.
  • Note: Interns may continue working in their internship until they leave campus or conclude with the symposium. Sponsor and assistant sponsor bring closure to internship experience with wrap-up and feedback to interns.
  • June 4 (Friday): Final examinations begin.
  • June 8 (Tuesday): Final examinations end.
  • June 13 (Sunday): Commencement Day.
