2. women students because their overall attrition rate from STEM disciplines is much higher than their male peers. WISP's highly respected Research Internship Program was established in 1990-91 to provide a meaningful experience that will positively impact the retention of young women with strong science interests. The program has been sustained by committed faculty sponsors (new and experienced) who are willing to work closely with bright young women and carefully guide and support them though one of their first research experiences.
