We seek faculty and researchers who are eager to work with pre-major undergraduate women interested in the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We also include the disciplines of environmental studies, physical anthropology, physical geography, neuroscience, and cognitive science in the internship program. Dartmouth offers its undergraduates a rich variety of programs and entrepreneurial ways to get involved with scientific research–including the outstanding opportunities that exist at the engineering and medical schools.
Our program focuses on:
WISP’s highly respected Research Internship Program was established in 1990-91 to provide a meaningful experience that will positively impact the retention of young women with strong science interests. The program has been sustained by committed faculty sponsors (new and experienced) who are willing to work closely with bright young women and carefully guide and support them though one of their first research experiences. Although the research internship program is oriented mainly toward first-year women, sophomores can apply for research internships in the disciplines of chemistry, computer science, engineering, math, and physics. We look forward to working with researchers across all departments to help meet our goal of supporting at least 60 interns each year. | Please note: WISP offers paid, part-time internships. We seek financial collaboration with any sponsor who has research funding available to support their intern — in part or fully. Sponsors who wish to work with a second intern must support that student’s wages. WISP has a limited budget to support interns but we welcome faculty-compensated interns into the program because of the benefits to students from group participation. Sponsors who cannot self-support a WISP intern are still invited to participate and will be funded through WISP up to the limits of our program budget. |
