At the Wheatley Lab we investigate the processes that make humans infinitely fascinating.
Our main focus is on how we understand and react to other human beings and how our brains evolved to handle the computations underlying this social intelligence. This includes how our brains recognize other humans from their form and motion and how accepting we are of approximation and distortion (e.g., humanoid robots). (See: Animacy)
We also investigate how human form and motion convey information beyond animacy (e.g., intent, emotion) and the neural substrates that subserve these inferences. (See: Emotion in Motion)
In addition to our main line of research, we are currently collaborating on two projects examining morality and agency.
