From a publisher/bookshop of erotica, an eclectic, classed, annotated guide
to erotic venues in Paris of widely varying kinds (chacun son dégoût);
some entries bear a symbol of evaluation: a pair of rouged feminine lips. The
chapter on prostitution assesses the impact of Article R. 625-8 of the new Penal
Code, which forbids even “passive” soliciting—and then goes on to list the principal
remaining red light districts. A 10-page chapter titled “Une nuit sur le Net”
lists web sites, but concludes the time could have been better spent otherwise.
Includes a 26-page glossary and a bibliography that omits, however, the Guide
Paucard des filles de Paris (1983, 1985). Neither this nor earlier editions

Forms Bd. 2 of the 1989 publication Deutsches Exilarchiv 1933-1945: Katalog
der Bücher und Broschüren, which had documented the holdings in Frankfurt
up to 1985. The present volume serves two functions: to supplement vol. 1 by
representing the holdings from 1986-1995, and to include for the first time
the Sammlung Exil-Literatur 1933-1945 held by the (formerly independent) Deutsche
Bücherei Leipzig, so far as they do not duplicate citations already included
in vol. 1. Together, the two volumes represent both collections and ongoing
acquisitions from 1933-1995. Includes initial editions, later printings and
translations of emigrants’ writings, editorial or illustration work and the
production of exile publishers; also the “inner emigration” work of Jewish publishers
and organizations in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia after 1933. Holding
libraries and the item call nos. are noted. Includes indexes of persons and
organizations, dedications, publishers or printing establishments, and topics.

Provides the meaning, usage and background of over 15,000 quotations and figures
of speech from antiquity to the present. Arrangement is alphabetical by the
significant word in the expression (e.g., “auf Herz und Nieren prüfen”
is listed under “auf”); however, ample cross references ensure the reader’s
success (e.g., there is a cross reference under “Herz…” to “auf Herz…). Scope
is international, and while there are many entries from Latin and other languages,
many are given in German. [RLK]
Duden: Kompaktwörterbuch
deutsche Rechtschreibung / herausgegeben und bearbeitet von der Dudenredaktion.
Mannheim: Dudenverlag, 2003. 431 pp. ISBN 341170571X. € 9.95.
A useful reference work for uniform usage under the new rules for orthography.
While the rules allow choice among traditional and new forms in many cases,
the Duden simplifies matters by presenting a single, allowable spelling and
syllabication for each word. Thus greater consistency in writing is afforded
without violating the Rechtschreibregeln. The work is presented as particularly
valuable within a corporate setting aiming at easily obtainable uniformity as
well as for individuals desiring less “work” in writing—Duden has already done
the work. Not intended for school usage, because the variants are not presented.
Introductory sections discuss the variants, punctuation, text processing, email
and other topics. While the entries do not provide definitions, some usage examples
are given. [RLK]

€ 21.50
Since its original publication in 1965 as Hauptschwierigkeiten der deutschen
Sprache, Duden has expanded the size of this title in its dictionary series
by over 200 pages, along the way re-naming it to Duden Zweifelsfälle der
deutschen Sprache (2. Aufl., 1972) before settling on the current title beginning
with the 3. Aufl. Alphabetical arrangement of words and topics associated with
ambiguous or erroneous usage. While most entries are relatively short, numerous
lengthy articles delve in-depth into usage. [RLK]

Based in part on Duden: das grosse Fremdwörterbuch, this dictionary is
arranged by words of Germanic origin, providing the corresponding words in German
usage which are of foreign origin, together with definitions of those foreign
words. In many cases, an illustrative sentence containing the foreign term is
included. Example: Buchbesprechung. Rezension (kritische Besprechung eines Buches);

1. Aufl. Bucha bei Jena: quartus-Verlag, 2003. 223 pp., ports.
ISBN 3931505472. € 9.90
Aside from East German lexicons devoted to writers from the Gera and Erfurt
regions published between 1974 and 1989, this is the first dictionary of Thuringian
authors. Foundational work was done in 1995 by the now defunct Literaturbüro
Thüringen and completed by the Thüringische Literaturhistorische Gesellschaft
Palmbaum e.V. Criterion for inclusion was that the person be living in Thuringia
since reunification and have published at least one non-specialist book. The
scope thus goes beyond belles lettres proper but excludes purely professional
literature. Articles are brief and bio-bibliographic in nature. Provides a glimpse
into the post-Wende intellectual life of one of the former East German states.

Gerlach, U. Henry.
Gottfried Keller Bibliographie. Tübingen: Niemeyer, 2003. 339
p. ISBN 3484108495. € 48
Complements Zippermann’s Gottfried Keller Bibliographie 1844-1934, although
the presence of pre-1934 citations in Gerlach’s compilation make unclear to
what extent, if any, it duplicates the former. In any case, Gerlach brings up
to date the Keller literature. International in scope, it includes both primary
and secondary works. The critical literature is organized by topic, including
sections for criticism on specific Keller works. As the author notes, such an
arrangement, while often helpful, is also subjective and problematic in many
cases; however, a keyword index allows the reader to access words in the titles
of secondary works, including personal names included as parts of the titles
of such works, thus overcoming whatever shortcomings are inherent in a topical
arrangement of citations. There is a separate index for authors of the secondary
literature. [RLK]

“Wende” und “Einheit” im Spiegel der deutschsprachigen Literatur: ein Handbuch.
Berlin; New York: de Gruyter, 2003. 2 vols.
ISBN 3110177757. € 148
An historical, critical and bibliographic overview of themes and issues relating
to literature, reading, publishing and society vis-à-vis the period of
and following German re-unification. Vol. 1 contains Grub’s discussion, which
is interspersed with excerpts from literary and critical sources. It covers
major themes, such as the plight of East German publishing following reunification,
a conceptualization of Wendeliteratur, language, utopia, self, as well as sections
devoted to the genres epic literature, lyric poetry and drama. Vol. 2 is a bibliography,
not of cited works (which are referenced in footnotes as they occur) but of
the qualitatively widely varying spectrum of writing and research on the gamut
of experience surrounding this period in German life. It is divided into a section
of primary literature organized by genres and formats, and a section of secondary
works organized mainly by genres, with some topical break-outs and a concluding
section of criticism of individual writers. [RLK]

Gegenwartsliteratur seit 1945. München: Nymphenburger, c2003. 2 vols. (1400

This is the latest edition of a standard bio-biographical dictionary of post-war
German-language authors, first edited under a variant title by Hermann Kunisch
in 1965. The dictionary has now doubled in size. Contributors to this edition
include not only scholars but also contemporary authors such as Hans Christoph
Buch, Wilhelm Genazino, Ursula Krechel, and others. This reference work competes
with (and complements) the Kritisches Lexikon zur deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur
(KLG). Although the latter has the advantage of more frequent loose-leaf (and
now also online) updates, the LDG at the point of this review contained authors
(e.g., Zuzsa Bánk) not yet included in the KLG. [RS]

München: Saur, 2004. 2 vols. (1113 pp.). ISBN 359824181X. € 298
The second in its series, this newest Kürschners takes its place alongside
its counterparts, the DeutscherMusik-Kalender (formerly Deutscher Musiker-Kalender),
Deutscher Gelehrten-Kalender and Deutscher Literatur-Kalender. With biographical
entries for over 8,500 living authors and citations to ca. 86,000 publications,
this edition more than doubles the extent of the 2001/2002 issue. The focus
is popular non-fiction literature written in German, as distinct from the specialized
professional, pedagogical and scientific literature proper, which is represented
in the Gelehrten-Kalender. Three quarters of the text is comprised of bio-bibliographical
entries for authors, and there are cross references to entries in the other
Kürschners. An appendix includes a Festkalender of birthday anniversaries
from 2003-2008; a directory of publishers referenced within the entries; a thesaurus-based
topical index, a geographical index by country/cities and a city-postal code
index. [RLK]

ed. Reallexikon der deutschen Literaturwissenschaft: Neubearbeitung des
Reallexikons der deutschen Literaturgeschichte / gemeinsam mit Georg Braungart
... [et al.]. Berlin ; New York: de Gruyter, 1997-2003. 3 vols.
Based on the 1926 work of Merker and Stammler, which then was issued in a 2nd
edition in 1955, the present title—completed in 2003 with vol. 3-- represents
not only a 3rd edition of its predecessors, but also a conceptual clarification.
That is to say, the new edition presents itself less as a “pure” German literary
history than as an encyclopedia of German literary criticism, including but
going beyond the content of literary history, to the concepts and methodology
of Germanistik. Each article is organized into discrete sections: an opening
brief definition; a longer Explikation which differentiates the variety of current
application; Wortgeschichte which elaborates on the term’s historical development
beyond and including the literary arena; Begriffsgeschichte, which elucidates
the development of the concept; Sachgeschichte, which relates the literary history
pertinent to the term; Forschungsgeschichte, that presents the research relating
to it; and finally, a bibliography. [RLK]
