WESS has submitted a proposal to ACRL for a one-day pre-conference prior to the 1997 ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco. Its intended audience is librarians from small and medium-sized libraries as well as Western Europeanists at large libraries who would like to extend their knowledge.

The pre-conference will begin on the evening of June 24, 1997 with a reception and plenary talk. At the reception, participants will have an opportunity to meet bibliographers with similar concerns and make contact with experienced foreign-language bibliographers and vendors who specialize in Western European studies. The pre-conference will continue the next day with sessions focused on specific language areas, a session on current issues in technical services as they relate to Western Europe, and a session on selection criteria for small and medium-sized libraries.

The goal of this one-day pre-conference is to enable librarians to identify and acquire the most important titles published in Western Europe, even if they can't read the titles without a dictionary. Each session will last an hour and a half and cover selection tools, electronic sources, and information about vendors and approval plans. The speakers will be WESS members who have broad knowledge and extensive experience in European information and publishing.

Please contact Eva Saroti, Chair of the Planning Committee, to provide your thoughts about which sessions would be most useful.
