Frey, Pascal.  Was lessen?  Ein Lexikon zur deutschen Literatur.  Bern:  h.e.p., 2003.  260 pp.  ISBN 3039050427 (pbk.).  • 14

A quick-reference synopsis of over 400 works of German literature (novels, short stories, autobiographical works, drama and theory) from Grimmelshausen to the present.  What makes this work particularly valuable to the student, in addition to the information provided in the articles, is the topical index.  Each of the works of literature is analyzed topically into one or more thematic categories (e.g. "DDR," "Glaube," "Identität: wer bin ich?" etc.), making the student's ever-elusive search for literature by topic a little easier.  Additionally, there is a period and genre breakdown showing all the selected titles in an historical and formal context.  A chronology and author index with titles rounds out the offering.  Bibliographies are not included.  [RLK]

Hanna, Christian M.  Gottfried Benn Bibliographie:  Sekundärliteratur, 1957-2003 / unter Mitarbeit von Ruth Winkler.  Berlin; New York:  de Gruyter, 2006.  ISBN 3110186667.  • 98

The first Benn bibliography since Lohner's Gottfried Benn:  Bibliographie 1912-1956 (Wiesbaden:  Limes, 1958).  Hanna's compilation encompasses 2,521 alphabetically arranged citations to the secondary literature on this significant voice in 20th century German poetry.  Indexes of work titles, topics and named persons, and serial titles provide multiple access points to the content.  [RLK]

Through its 2,000 annotated entries, the bibliography covers publications relating to or providing first-hand accounts of the sorry post-war "aftershock" of forced expulsions of Germans from formerly occupied eastern regions.  The main section is alphabetically arranged by author, with a following section on omnibus volumes and anthologies; additionally, a short supplement section and a bibliography on the treatment of the topic in literature (found in the introductory essay) complete the entries.  Several indexes unlock the content:  by expelled-from regions, by prose genres (type of account, etc.), by towns and regions, and by publishers.  One other index extracts works that appeared in the Soviet-controlled occupation zones of Germany and in the GDR from 1946-1990. [RLK]
