As Frau Wahrig-Burfeind states in the preface, there is no turning back from
the transition to the German orthographic reform that took effect Aug. 1, 1998

refinements based on criticism, which could be instituted thereafter. The entries
and examples in this dictionary are solely constructed according to the new
rules, while ambiguous cases are presented for guidance. In addition to the
usual appended grammatical apparatus, there is a substantial detailed commentary
essay by Dr. Peter Eisenberg on “Grundregeln der deutschen Orthografie.” [RLK]

The only current dictionary, according to the editor, of such vast scope to
treat Spanish and American history, this work offers fairly brief articles covering
local history, political and cultural figures, military affairs, political and
social concepts, socioeconomic and ideological terms, and cultural materials.
The coverage is sweeping, from prehistory to the 20th century, from Spain to
the Americas, from theory to historiography. Alphabetically arranged, 4,000
signed entries include bibliography and cross references; there are over 140
colored illustrations. [SFR]
Diccionario político
y social del siglo 19 español. Eds. Javier Fernández Sebastián
and Juan Francisco Fuentes. Madrid: Alianza, 2002. 772 p.; 24 cm. ISBN 8420686034.
The fruit of a multi-year collaborative project, this dictionary does not simply
define terms. Rather it gathers in over 100 articles the essentials of the socio-political
vocabulary or concepts, which developed in Spain as in the rest of the Western
world during the 19th century, and remain in force today. Written by specialists,
entries on terms such as liberalism, democracy, working class, constitution,
party, capitalism, etc., treat these concepts--born in the liberal revolutions
of that era – in the Spanish context,
giving readers information and a critical perspective on the ideological world
of Spain in the 19th century. The entries have cross-references; bibliography
and subject indexes complete the work. [SFR]
