James Spohrer (CU), Nijhoff Jury Chair, 1994-5
The WESS Nijhoff Jury which convened at the Midwinter Conference in Philadelphia has attributed the 1995 Martinus Nijhoff International West European Specialist Grant to Dr. Barbara Halporn, Head of Collection Development at the Widener Library of Harvard University. Dr. Halporn's proposal outlined the final steps necessary for research and manuscript preparation of her book, "The World of Johann Amerbach: Early Printing in its Social Context."
The WESS Nijhoff Jury viewed the research proposed by Dr. Halporn as a valuable contribution to scholarship in Western European book and publishing history, and an important addition to our knowledge of the sociology of the spread of literacy in the 15th and 16th centuries.R
