ANNUAL CONFERENCE PROGRAM

European Connections: Electronic Resources for Western Europe

--Ceres Birkhead (UU)

1995 Program Committee Chair

In recent years, electronic resources for Western Europe specialists have increased to a remarkable degree, varying in levels of technological sophistication, from OPACs to specialized listservs, to full-text and image databases. The dissemination of information about these sources, of their content and the means of accessing them, and the politics of electronic publishing, are the focus of this year's WESS program, to be held Monday, June 26, 9:30-11 AM.

Prof. James Marchand, of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, will speak on network access to Western European archives and reference-type files, including Project Runeberg and the Eurodicautom.

Mark Olsen, of the University of Chicago, is assistant director of the ARTFL Project, a research and service undertaking which provides access to the Treasury of the French Language database. This database is the largest of its kind, containing French texts from the 16th century to the present. Olsen will provide an overview of future developments at ARTFL and demonstrate a sample of text/image databases, as exemplified by the Renaissance Dante database and a collection of French revolutionary pamphlets.

WESS member James Campbell, of the University of Virginia, will address a topic of increasing concern to librarians and scholars, to both users and producers of information, namely, the political aspects of electronic publishing. Julie Still, of Trenton State College and former editor of the WESS Newsletter's "Europe in Bits & Bytes" column, will offer a commentary on the presentations.
