Catalogs: All German-Speaking Countries


• Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog
  The best bet as a starting point for searching German library catalogs. The KVK is an extremely useful "meta-catalog" that allows for simultaneous searching of several library catalogs, among them the union catalogs for Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Southwest Germany. The list of covered catalogs keeps growing; it now includes Austrian and Swiss libraries, as well as an increasing number of other national catalogs.
• Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke
  Online database of 15th century printed books, produced by the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin. Supplements the printed edition with additional indexes and draft versions of new descriptions. Requires downloaded server software.
  
• VD16 -- Verzeichnis der im deutschen Sprachraum erschienenen Drucke des 16. Jahrhunderts
  Documents 16th century German imprints. The database now conatains new titles not contained in the print version. This is a more complete version of the VD16 than the one at Wolfenbüttel but it requires downloaded server software.
• VD17 -- Verzeichnis der im deutschen Sprachraum erschienenen Drucke des 17. Jahrhunderts
  A major cataloging project with the purpose of creating a national bibliography for the17th century.

Catalogs: Germany


• Bayerische Staatsbibliothek
  A major resource. The main OPAC covers 1501 – 1840, 1953– present. New: an "image catalog" based on the old card catalog now covers the years 1841-1952.
• Bibliothekskataloge
  A convenient listing of major online catalogs in Germany.
• Die Deutsche Bibliothek
  Home page of the Deutsche Bibliothek (Frankfurt) and the Deutsche Bücherei (Leipzig). Separate online catalogs for Frankfurt and Leipzig. In addition, Z39.50 Gateway provides another useful access point for German library catalogs as well as an alternative search interface for the Deutsche Nationalbibliografie online (Katalogdatenbank ILTIS).
• OPAC der Zeitschriftendatenbank
  The major union list of serials for German libraries

Also of interest: WEBIS, an overview of the Sondersammelgebiete (areas of special emphasis) in German academic libraries (includes links to the participating libraries, descriptions, contacts, etc.).

• Catalog of the Österreichische Bibliothekenverbund
  Union catalog for the Austrian National Library and the major Austrian academic libraries. There is also access to catalogs of individual participating libraries.
  
• Österreichische Nationalbibliothek
  Several OPACs. Of particular interest among the ONB's offerings is Ariadne , a Women's Studies database.
• Bibliotheken Online
  Union catalog of Austrian public libraries.

• Schweizerische Landesbibliothek: Helveticat
  The OPAC of the Swiss national library. The SLB also offers a union catalog of Swiss periodicals (Schweizer Zeitschriftenportal) and a useful collection of informational links about Switzerland (SwissInfoDesk).
