Employment awards recognize students, staff

Madhavi Menon ’09, a religion and government major from Woodbridge, Conn., has been named Student Employee of the Year for her work as an Admissions Office intern. Menon coordinates the student tour guide program and was instrumental in planning Dimensions of Dartmouth, a program for admitted students. The April 17 awards presentation, sponsored by the Student Employment Office, had Menon doing double duty as it coincided with Dimensions weekend.

"It has been an absolute joy to work with Madhavi," says Assistant Director of Admissions Colleen Wearn ’06, who nominated Menon. "Her willingness to take on challenging projects, her dedication and maturity, and her warm, caring presence have all enriched our office immeasurably."

Menon says, "I love working for the Admissions Office. It’s definitely the best job I’ve ever had." Menon is also involved in Milan (the South Asian students association), the South Asian dance troupe Vandana, and Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority.

Also recognized was Gabrielle Lucke, former associate director of Collis Center and Student Activities, who received the award for Student Employer of the Year. Lucke was nominated by student employees Kaitlyn Sheehan ’09 and Ariana Almas ’11.

"Gabrielle is able to put a positive spin on everything, and is one of the best problem-solvers I know," says Sheehan. "She is truly an inspiration."

"Collis Center is the living room of the campus, and the students I worked with there are its heart," says Lucke, who was responsible for facilities and operations management at Collis. "They are there from open to well after close, setting up and breaking down events, staffing the info desk, and serving as the first round of troubleshooters."

Lucke is also a member of the Hartford (Vermont) School Board and was a founding member of the Dartmouth Center on Addiction, Recovery and Education Advisory Committee.

Other finalists for Student Employment Awards this year were John Beck ’09, also of Admissions; Lauren Breach ’09 of the Office of Greek Letter Organizations and Societies; Brian Freeman ’11 of the Rockefeller Center; and Joseph Smith ’08 of the Jones Media Center. Winners are selected by a committee of students and staff members.
