Dartmouth's Financial Fitness program gives employees the tools to take charge of their financial health. The curriculum covers topics such as budgeting tools, savings strategies, and credit scores reports.

Sherry Maher of the nonprofit organization Bonnie CLAC teaches the program. Her top tips:

  • Have a plan: "What do you want to accomplish, by when, and what are the steps to get you there? Create a road map to help keep you on a positive track with your finances."
  • Needs vs. wants: "We have forgotten how to delay our wants and desires. Identify the critical basic needs that must be met; any other expenditures must depend on available funds."
  • Saving: "First save to establish an emergency fund-which is replenished when used-and then begin paying off debt and saving for other long-term goals."

The six-week program will again be offered (free of charge) on Thursday nights beginning May 21 and Tuesday nights beginning September 8. Lunchtime financial fitness discussions are also available-the June session will address food economics.
