A memorial service was held in Rollins Chapel on Nov. 30 for Kathy Slattery Phillips, 55, Dartmouth’s long-time director of sports information, who died Nov. 21 from complications related to a cerebral aneurysm.

Phillips came to the College in 1977, and was named director of sports information in 1983. The second woman SID in the Ivy League, she was responsible for all phases of communications relating to Dartmouth’s 34 varsity teams and played an important role in the evolution of women’s athletics at Dartmouth. Phillips was dean of sports information directors in the Ivy League.

“Kathy brought energy and enthusiasm and professionalism to everything she did,” says President James Wright. “She cared deeply about student athletes, the coaches, and the Dartmouth athletic programs. She will be sorely missed.”

“The feeling of sorrow, and sadness is overwhelming within the department and College and with everyone who was touched by Kathy on a professional and a personal level,” says Josie Harper, director of athletics and recreation. “The Dartmouth athletic family has lost a dear friend and a wonderful colleague.”

A 1974 graduate of Syracuse University, Phillips was also an accomplished golfer. In her career she won 36 club championships in New Hampshire, including 22 at the Hanover Country Club. She won the 1988 New Hampshire state women’s championship and for many years she was prominent in state and regional women’s golf. For all of her individual honors, she regarded her role in establishing the state’s junior golf program as her most notable achievement.

She is survived by her husband, Corey, whom she married in 2005; a stepson, Carter, and a stepdaughter, Elizabeth; her mother, Jeannette Slattery of Concord, N.H,; her brother, Richard (Rick) Slattery ; and a nephew, Matthew Slattery of Rochester, N.Y.

Donations may be made to the Kathy and Corey Phillips Family Fund, to benefit Kathy’s young stepchildren, care of Mascoma Savings Bank, 67 North Park St., Lebanon, N.H. 03766.
