College pays tribute to coeducation
Thirty-five years after the College first opened its doors to undergraduate
women, those women have a lot to be proud of. This November, Dartmouth will
host two special events celebrating women s progress within the institution and
the path-breaking spirit of professional women in medicine, politics, finance,
entrepreneurship, and humanitarian service.

The first of those events, Women in Medicine, to be held Nov. 8 and 9 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), is a
leadership and professional development conference open to all women and men of
Dartmouth and DHMC house staff. While women undergraduates were admitted to
Dartmouth in 1972, it is less well known that women were admitted to Dartmouth
Medical School as early as 1960. Women in Medicine will bring colleagues in
medicine, science, and research together for a stimulating program devoted to
personal and professional renewal. Provocative discussions will explore such
topics as gender and generational differences, volunteerism, networks, and
support systems.
The second program, Women at Dartmouth celebrates 35 years of women on
campus, from the pioneers who entered the first co-ed undergraduate classes
through today s iGeneration. Women at Dartmouth salutes the daughters of
Dartmouth and their legacy to the College and the world. Susan DeBevoise
Wright, wife of President James Wright, is honorary chair of the program. All
Dartmouth alumnae are invited to meet and mingle in a weekend celebration
featuring keynote speaker Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand 88, D-N.Y., alumnae
symposia, alumnae author book signings, an alumnae product/service gallery, a
reception with Dartmouth women faculty, a look at works by women artists in the
Hood Museum of Art, and more. The event takes place Nov. 9 through 11 at
various locations on the Dartmouth campus.
Both events will acknowledge women who have made contributions in ways both
extraordinary and everyday. For more information and registration information,
