Michael Burton to Head UPNE

Provost Barry Scherr has announced the appointment of Michael P. Burton as director of the University Press of New England (UPNE). Burton, the production director at UPNE, has been serving as interim director since June 2006. Based at Dartmouth, UPNE is supported by a consortium of schools: Brandeis University, Dartmouth College, the University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University, Tufts University, and the University of Vermont.

“Mike has been a valuable production director at UPNE, and he’s proven himself an effective leader during his tenure as interim director,” says Barry Scherr. “I look forward to continuing to work with him to build on his past successes.”

Burton brings years of publishing and printing experience to the job. Before becoming UPNE’s production director in 1993, he was the production director at Princeton University Press. He has also served as production manager at the University of Alabama Press, and he held the same title at Memphis University Press. He has worked at numerous print production companies, including Wimmer Brothers Inc. and Plough Printing, both in Memphis.

“I’m excited to begin working with my team as director of UPNE,” says Burton. “Our six member presses bring a wonderful range of ideas to the scholarly publishing table, and our unique structure provides a framework for a strong series of important regional New England titles. I hope to build on the impressive work of my predecessors and lead UPNE through the challenges brought about by the digital revolution. It is easy to put ‘content’ up on the Web or provide electronic versions of books, but we must find steady and predictable income from these efforts as well. UPNE has a dedicated and professional staff, and I look forward to working with them in my new role as we seek solutions to these challenges and publish some great books.”
