Sigma Phi Epsilon recognizes Board chair, students at annual meeting
The national leadership of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity
presented Charles E.
"Ed" Haldeman Jr. '70, chairman of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees, its
biennial citation for distinguished career or professional achievement on Aug.
11 during the fraternity's annual conclave in Atlanta. The citation recognizes
in particular Haldeman's record of building trust in organizations he has
led.

Only 241 of the fraternity's 263,000 alumni have received the citation since
it was created in 1965. These include governors, U.S. senators, and
presidential cabinet members; CEOs of major U.S. corporations; leaders in the
military, academic, and religious organizations; and artists, authors, and
performing artists. Haldeman will be the sixth Dartmouth alumnus to receive a
Sigma Phi Epsilon citation. Previous Dartmouth recipients include
author/illustrator Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel '25; Ellis Briggs '21 and Parker
W. Borg '61, who both served as U.S. ambassadors to several countries; Canadian
economist David E. Bond '60; and Basil O'Connor '12, who was president of the
March of Dimes and a close friend, advisor and law partner of President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Also receiving citations this year are fellow "SigEps" James T. Conway,
commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps; Fred L. Turner, chair and CEO of
McDonald's Corporation; and D. Travis Engen, the recently retired chair of
Alcan, Inc.
In a June 20 letter informing Haldeman of the upcoming award, fraternity
Grand President Archer L. Yeatts III wrote, "While your achievements as a
business leader and as a Dartmouth Trustee and now chairman of Dartmouth's
Board of Trustees merit this recognition, the [Citation Nominating] Commission
was especially impressed by your lifetime dedication to honesty, hard work, and
taking care of clients and colleagues. Our Brothers will benefit from learning
how you have rebuilt trust in Putnam Investments, Delaware Investments, and
elsewhere by being fair, morally grounded, and concerned about people."
Also at the annual meeting, the New Hampshire Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi
Epsilon at Dartmouth won its fifth consecutive Buchanan Outstanding Chapter
Award, marking the sixth such award in its history (1965, 1999, 2001, 2003,
2005, 2007). The award is indicative of the highest level of undergraduate
achievement in the fraternity, and it is awarded once every two years to a
small and distinguished group of chapters that exhibit excellence in all areas
of their operation. In recognition of winning its fifth straight award, New
Hampshire Alpha received a special Gold Buchanan Cup, an achievement only a few
chapters have accomplished.
Founded in 1901, Sigma Phi Epsilon is one of the nation's largest
fraternities, with the fourth greatest number of lifetime members and the
greatest number of undergraduate members.
The Sigma Phi Epsilon awards are made every two years. A commission comprised
of citation recipients from the past three conclaves nominates candidates to
the National Board of Directors, which makes the ultimate selection of
honorees.
In addition to his role as the chair of Dartmouth Board of Trustees,
Haldeman is president and chief executive officer of Putnam Investments. He previously served as
CEO of Delaware Investments, and as president and chief operating officer of
the United Asset Management Corp., after 24 years with Cooke and Bieler Inc. He
received an A.B. degree in economics from Dartmouth in 1970, having earned
summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors. He received M.B.A. and J.D. degrees
from Harvard University in 1974. Haldeman has served for many years in various
Dartmouth volunteer leadership capacities, including as a member of the Dean's
Council and the President's Leadership Council, as an Alumni Fund leadership
agent, class agent and regional agent, and as a scholarship fund chair.
Haldeman was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2004 and was elected to the
position of chair this past June by his fellow Board members. He also serves on
the Board's five-member Governance Committee, which is currently conducting a
review of the size, composition, and selection of Trustees to ensure the
College has a strong and effective governing body that will continue to
maintain Dartmouth's tradition of excellence.
