Helping hands in Biloxi
On a Tucker Foundation
service trip this June, Dartmouth staff, faculty, and alumni joined forces to
support the residents of Biloxi, Miss., who continue to recover from Hurricane
Katrina. This marked the first time a Tucker trip was designated specifically
for Dartmouth employees and alumni.

"We're excited to extend the service trips opportunity beyond students to
additional members of the Dartmouth community," says Stuart Lord, the Virginia
Rice Kelsey '61S Dean of the Tucker Foundation. "And we're pleased they
responded."
Busy each day of the week, the participants cleaned up an abandoned public
park and playground, taught art classes to 6 to 12 year olds, helped elderly
people move from their homes, helped construct a new house for a family, and
cleared trails on the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
"It was physically and emotionally draining," says participant Mary Bourque,
a project manager for the Office of
Planning, Design & Construction. "But it was incredibly rewarding. The
most memorable part was talking with people, and listening to their stories. I
was so struck by their positive attitudes."
A second trip to Biloxi for Dartmouth staff, faculty, and alumni is being
planned for June of 2008.
