Illinois Entertainer calls them “pop rock prodigies.” They’ve
recorded six albums since 2000, and one of their songs was recently featured on
MTV’s The Real World. The indie rock phenomenon Filligar is almost pure Dartmouth: twin
brothers Teddy and Pete Mathias (Class of 2009) and their younger brother
Johnny (Class of 2011), started the band in high school, together with Casey
Gibson, who now attends Hamilton College. The Mathias brothers’ dad, John
Mathias, graduated from Dartmouth in 1969 and two sisters, Alice and Marian,
are members of the Classes of 2007 and 2011, respectively. “I’ve been fortunate
enough to study under two percussionists who are among the best drummers in the
country,” says Pete Mathias about his Dartmouth experience. Adds brother
Johnny, “I’ve received the kind of instruction here that wasn’t available at
home. Likewise, it has really helped me a lot to be constantly around
music—going to Spaulding, going to Friday Night Rock. I’m always learning from
the professors as well as the students, and it’s been a lot of fun.” Filligar
will open for the legendary Otis Day & The Knights on Dartmouth’s Green Key
Weekend, May 17. The show will be at Alpha Delta fraternity. Next stop for the
band? Chicago and cities beyond.
