Recognition for Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students
Steve Kelley ’81, of The Times-Picayune in New
Orleans, has received the Scripps Howard National Award for Editorial
Cartooning for 2007. Kelley returned to Dartmouth recently as a Montgomery
Fellow. His visit included a public lecture, “Art Irritates Life: Politics and
Stuff People Actually Care About,” which he gave on Feb. 19 as part of the
series, America in 2008: Commentators and Cartoonists. The award, presented by
the Scripps Howard Foundation, credits Kelley’s “ability to weave words and
imagery” and “his use of irony to satirize some of the year’s headlines.”
Tom Scanlon, a postdoctoral fellow at Thayer School, has
been named the Carol Basbaum Memorial Research Fellow by the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation. The award is made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Research
Fellowship applicant who receives the best priority score during the
foundation’s review of research proposals. Scanlon is a member of the
laboratory of Assistant Professor of Engineering Karl Griswold, and of the
Dartmouth Lung Biology Center.
A number of Dartmouth Greek organizations and members were honored by their
national chapters. Jeffrey Coleman ’08 of Lambda Upsilon
Lambda was named the Undergraduate Hermano of the Year. At the Carlson
Leadership Academy, a personal development program for Sigma Phi
Epsilon chapter officers, Dartmouth’s Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter was
awarded the Manpower Excellence Award for being the largest fraternity on
campus; the 90+ Award, for having more than 90 members last year; the Grand
Chapter Scholarship Cup, for having the top grade-point average among
Dartmouth’s 13 fraternities; and the Phi Beta Kappa Wheelhouse Award for having
a 3.15+ GPA and fostering academic achievement. Travis Green
’08, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, was awarded the Frank J. Ruck
Interfraternity Leadership Award for showing outstanding campus leadership and
improving campus life. Sigma Phi Epsilon Chapter Counselor Carey
Heckman ’76 was named the District 1 Volunteer of the Year.
