Recognition for Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students
John Winn,
professor of chemistry, delivered the keynote address, "Selecting Exciting
Topics for Student of Twenty-First Century Physical Chemistry," at the second
annual University Fundamental Courses Forum on Chemistry and Chemical
Engineering in Wuhan, China, last fall. The forum, whose 2007 theme was "Face
the World: Efficiently Improving the Course Content and Teaching Quality of
Fundamental Undergraduate Courses on Chemistry and Chemical Engineering," is a
prestigious national event attended by over 600 faculty from across China and
focused on teaching and course design. Winn was invited to present on
developments in teaching methods in physical chemistry based on the
achievements of graduates of Dartmouth's Department of Chemistry. Winn has been
at Dartmouth since 1982, and he authored a comprehensive physical chemistry
textbook in 1995. His research focuses on the information on molecular
structure and dynamics that can be attained from high-resolution spectroscopy.
He is currently designing and fabricating a new apparatus to study molecules
trapped in solid hydrogen, a novel material known as a "quantum solid."
