Schweitzer Fellows Sponsor Service Symposium at Thayer School
Last month, Thayer School of
Engineering hosted a “Symposium on Service,” sponsored by this year’s Albert Schweitzer Fellows,
members of a national program that provides students with funding and support
for projects benefiting local underserved populations. The event featured a
keynote address by former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop ’37, a panel
discussion with leaders of local service organizations, and a volunteer
fair.

Emmy Liscord, a Dartmouth Medical
School (DMS) student and one of the symposium’s organizers, emphasized the
fellows’ interest in encouraging students to get involved. “It is easy for us
to become wrapped up in the rigors of our curriculum,” she said. “Community
service is a wonderful way to give back, and it can strengthen your commitment
to whatever life path you have chosen.”
This sentiment was reflected in Koop’s address, “Confronting Unmet Health
and Social Needs.” Koop spoke of the “poverty of spirit” plaguing our world,
but maintained that he thought better of America, and far better of the
Dartmouth community. He noted the sizable attendance, saying that despite the
inclement January weather, “You’re here to see how you can be in service to
other people through the various organizations you’re affiliated with.”
Speaking in the panel discussion were Tom Ketteridge, managing director of
The Haven; Ceil Furlong, clinic and case manager of the Good Neighbor Health
Clinic; and Barbara Couch, vice president of public relations at Hypertherm.
Ketteridge and Furlong pointed to the notable difference Dartmouth student
volunteers have made in their organizations.
Of the approximately 30 Schweitzer Fellows in New Hampshire and Vermont, 14
are from Dartmouth.
