The Joy of Competing

Volunteer Emily Luscz ’08 (right) congratulates an athlete at the sixth annual Upper Valley Winter Special Olympics Games. The event was held on a chilly Jan. 19 at the Dartmouth Skiway, where 130 athletes competed in alpine skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing.

About 150 Dartmouth students helped make the day a great success, says Pete Bleyler ’61, director of the games. “They volunteered as individuals and in groups, from fraternities and sororities, the football team, the men’s and women’s tennis teams, the ski patrol, and the women’s rugby teams. By donating their time, energy, and many smiles, they helped intellectually challenged individuals demonstrate their courage and experience the joy of competing.”

For their key support, Bleyler gives special thanks to President James Wright; Doug Holler, general manager of the Skiway; Kirsten Orloff ’10, chair of the Tucker Foundation Special Olympics group; and Emily Luscz ’08 and Kyle Sherry ’09, members of the games management team.
