In his seven years as manager of the Dartmouth Cross-Country Ski Center, based at the historic Dartmouth Outing Club house on Occom Pond, Mike Silverman has helped to strengthen the center’s role as a casual winter gathering place for the Dartmouth community.

In addition to renting three kinds of cross-country skis (classic, skate, and back country), plus ice skates and snowshoes with poles, the center offers Saturday story times for kids, hot chocolate, and roasted marshmallows over outdoor fires. The center also hosts a variety of cross-country skiing lessons.

Silverman plays a key role in organizing the Feb. 23 “Howl at the Moon” event on the golf course. The progressive dinner features different stations, illuminated by torches and fire pits, where local merchants present a variety of hot foods. Contact the center to reserve a ticket for next month’s event.
“This place is humming,” says the energetic Silverman, who has worked for the Outdoor Programs Office, which oversees the center, for the past 10 years. “It really brings the community together. You look out on the ice and there will be Dartmouth students, high school students, neighbors, families, everyone.”
The center has recently expanded its hours and is now open to the public seven days a week. On average, rentals cost about $12 per-person a day, plus $10 for those who want to use the groomed portion of the 25 kilometers of ski trails. For more information, visit the center online or call 643-6534.
A place to talk
In addition to providing one-on-one, professional support to individuals, the Faculty/Employee Assistance Program (F/EAP) sponsors a variety of events for groups.
On Jan. 23, there will be a workshop on understanding and managing anger presented by James Platt, director of F/EAP. Regular gatherings include a support group for employees who are caregivers (the fourth Thursday of every month), and a forum for stepparents (the first Thursday of every month).
F/EAP is a confidential, free benefit for all Dartmouth employees and their families. For more information, call 646-1165 or contact via e-mail.
