Towards the end of
November each year, “Big Green” takes on a whole new meaning for Bob Thebodo,
grounds department supervisor, and his FO&M tree team. It’s their
responsibility to harvest the tree that ornaments the Dartmouth Green for the
holidays. “The trees have come from all over the Upper Valley,” Thebodo notes,
“and are usually donated by their owners.” With the 2007 tree a memory (and
chipped for a second life as mulch) Thebodo is ready to start recruiting trees
for 2008 and beyond.
He is looking for spruces or firs, from about 30 feet tall to about 50 feet
of usable height. “We can harvest larger ones, but we’re limited by what we can
transport,” he says. “The overall size and appearance of the tree are very
important.” Thebodo notes that the best-looking trees are often ones that have
grown without restrictions from buildings or other trees.
Thebodo welcomes e-mail about potential trees at robert.thebodo@dartmouth.edu. He
can also be reached at 646-3245.
