Dean Richardson '74, chief of surgery and the Charles W. Raker Professor of
Equine Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's Widener Hospital for Large
Animals at New Bolton Center, with his famous patient, Kentucky Derby winner
Barbaro. Richardson, a top equine surgeon, led the surgical team that pieced
Barbaro's lower right hind leg back together after he shattered it just moments
out of the gate in the Preakness Stakes on May 20. Richardson learned to ride
horses while at Dartmouth, an experience he credits with sparking his interest
in veterinary medicine.
