Dartmouth to Host Presidential Primary Debates in September

NBC's Tim Russert to moderate

On Sept. 26 and 27, 2007, Dartmouth will be center stage as the battle for the Democratic and Republican nominations heats up. The College will host and co-sponsor two debates among the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates. Both events will be simulcast and streamed online by MSNBC and NECN and broadcast live by New Hampshire Public Radio, all of which are co-sponsoring the event. The 90-minute debates will be moderated by Tim Russert, NBC's Washington Bureau chief and host of Meet the Press.

President James Wright says that political debates at their best provide opportunities for candidates to sharpen positions and engage issues. "We hope this event will facilitate that process and meet a clear public need," says Wright. "Moreover, one of the benefits of being a Dartmouth student is that during every student's four years here, a political campaign literally extends to our front porch. Many students become politically engaged and a number sign on to work with one of the candidates."

Russert, a veteran political reporter and moderator, says, "New Hampshire and the nation want to know and deserve to know where the candidates stand on the issues. These debates will do just that."

Dartmouth is a frequent campaign stop for presidential hopefuls, and has previously hosted a number of presidential candidate debates, including "First in the Nation: A New Hampshire Town Meeting" in 1999, attended by then-leading Republican and Democratic candidates, including eventual Democratic nominee Al Gore.

Ticketing procedures will be announced as soon as possible.
