Norris Cotton Cancer Center cited as one of "America's Best"

For the fourth year in a row, Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC) at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) has been named one of the top 50 cancer facilities in the country by U.S.News & World Report.

The U.S. News "America's Best Hospitals" issue annually ranks the 50 top hospitals in their specialty areas from among 6,007 medical centers surveyed.  The rankings are based on a numerical assessment (the U.S. News score) made up of three equal parts: reputation, mortality rate and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services.

Norris Cotton Cancer Center is one of 39 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States, as designated by the National Cancer Institute.  As such, it is a site for cutting edge research, clinical trials and advanced treatments and therapies for cancer patients from New Hampshire, Vermont and the surrounding region.  The cancer center has recently expanded its operations into Southern New Hampshire, with a dedicated facility and staff at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Manchester.  In September, it will open Norris Cotton Cancer Center-North in St. Johnsbury, Vt., to bring advanced cancer care closer for residents of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and New Hampshire's North Country.

Although research and clinical trials are a key part of the cancer center's activities, the U.S. News ranking is "a valuable objective affirmation that we are making a difference where it really matters-in the way we care for patients," said Norris Cotton Cancer Center Director Mark Israel. "I'm extremely proud of the fact that our center scores among the highest for the range of services and technologies we provide to patients, as well as for our nurse to patient ratios and our strong, positive outcomes. We are taking the excellence and scholarship from our research labs and applying it with great success and compassionate care in our patient areas."

The U.S.News and World Report "America's Best Hospitals" issue hit newsstands July 11.  For more information on the Best Hospitals, go to www.usnews.com.
