Vandewalle recognized by Fulbright Foundation for second time

Dirk Vandewalle
Dirk Vandewalle

Associate Professor of Government Diederik "Dirk" Vandewalle was awarded his second Fulbright Regional Research Award to support his research on the Arab Gulf countries. This is only the second time that the Fulbright Foundation has given a second Middle East Regional Award to an individual. Vandewalle's project focuses on Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait, and investigates why these oil exporters have been slow to institute political and economic reforms. His research challenges the traditional explanations for these deficits, including the influence of Islam, tribal society and the oil "rentier" economy, focusing instead on deficiencies in building state institutions that can help in reform efforts. The Fulbright Regional Research Award provides support for research projects of historical or contemporary focus, comparative or regional in scope or where data must be collected in several countries.
