The Dartmouth College Alumni Council at its May 20 meeting in Hanover voted unanimously by secret ballot to endorse the new Proposed Constitution of the Dartmouth Alumni Association. The constitution, submitted to the council by the Alumni Governance Task Force (AGTF) following five years of debate, alumni commentary, and revision, will be presented to 66,500 alumni from September 15 through October 31, 2006, for an all-media vote.
The Council also voted by 87 percent to amend the existing Alumni Council constitution to permit all-media voting on future amendments to the Alumni Council constitution, a provision that ensures that the document the council endorses will match the final document posted by the alumni association executive committee. Under the guidelines of the alumni association, the proposed new constitution must be publicly posted on its Web site by July 2 in order for the vote to begin on September 15.
"The AGTF has worked very hard to create a document that reflects many viewpoints," says Alumni Council President Rick Routhier '73 Tu'76. "This new constitution gives alumni a much stronger voice in the life of the College and greater participation in the choice of alumni and College leadership. And it creates a much more democratic and representative alumni governance system. I urge alumni to consider it carefully and participate in the vote this fall."
