SEAD Announces New Partner Schools

The Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth (SEAD) program has selected its partner high schools for the next three years. Thirty 2006-2008 SEAD Scholars will come from Stevens High School in Claremont, N.H., Noonan Business Academy in Dorchester, Mass., the Bronx Center for Mathematics and Science in New York, Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, S.C., and El Cerrito High School, in El Cerrito, Calif.

"We are excited by the selection of these diverse high schools," says SEAD Program Director Jay Davis. "Both the schools and the Dartmouth community will be enriched by the long-term partnership."

Founded in 2001, the SEAD program expands the educational opportunities for promising high school students from selected under-resourced urban and rural schools, while offering the Dartmouth community a unique opportunity for service learning. Co-sponsored by the Tucker Foundation and the Department of Education, SEAD offers high school students academic preparedness and personal growth through specially designed courses, year-round mentoring, and extensive interactions with successful college students. For Dartmouth staff and volunteers (more than 1,000 Dartmouth students have been involved with the program), SEAD offers an unparalleled opportunity to learn with others from different experiences within the core of a rich liberal arts education.

SEAD Scholars will spend a total of seven weeks on campus over three summer sessions, taking classes while being mentored by Dartmouth undergraduates. They will explore wilderness areas in New Hampshire and Maine, write college essays, prepare for admissions interviews, and live with students and staff from around the country. The SEAD students will also return to campus each winter for a five-day reunion weekend, co-sponsored by Hanover High School. Additionally, Dartmouth will send an undergraduate intern to each of the SEAD schools during three consecutive winters to provide support to its students as well as its partner schools' academic and counseling departments.
