United Way campaign begins

Goal for College is $235,000; goal for students is $12,000

Dartmouth's campuswide Upper Valley United Way (UVUW) fundraising campaign will kick off during the week of Monday, Oct. 11, with division-specific programming for each area of the College. Bill Hochstin, Dartmouth United Way Campaign Chair, has set a goal of $235,000 for the upcoming College campaign.

"By giving to the United Way, donors help others right here in our own community," said Hochstin, who is also the Director of Materials Management in the Procurement Office. "I'm always inspired and motivated by the generosity of the Dartmouth family; I'm sure this year will be the same."

UVUW provides a variety of health and human services to the people of the region, including food and clothing programs, home-repair assistance, child-care support, mental-health services and job training. More than 25 local agencies partner with the United Way to provide services to thousands of people in more than 35 communities in the Upper Valley. Dartmouth is one of many Upper Valley organizations that have a workplace campaign, and the total Upper Valley goal for United Way giving this year is $1.045 million.

Dartmouth staff and faculty volunteers, called Division Coordinators, will design individual United Way events and activities for their divisions during the kick-off week. For example, the Development Office will host an informal dessert pot-luck gathering on Friday, Oct. 15, where they will show a short video about the UVUW and distribute UVUW materials. The Dean of the College divisional campaign kickoff will include a luncheon. Many divisions are hosting guest speakers from United Way organizations.

Numerous student groups, clubs and societies also raise money for the UVUW. The student campaign will be led by the Dartmouth Chapter of the Order of Omega, a national coalition of Greek organizations dedicated to scholarship and community service. Co-chairs Nicole Valco '05 and Peter Chalmers '05 have set a goal of $12,000.

Last year, Dartmouth gifts to the campaign reached more than $226,000, including more than $7,500 in contributions from students.

"Donations to the United Way are an investment in our community's future; it's a tradition we want to sustain," Hochstin said.
