The second annual conference for Dartmouth support staff will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 4, and will address the importance of the support staff members' role as educators and issues of workplace diversity.

The conference runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Alumni Hall of the Hopkins Center, and is free and open to all non-exempt staff members from Dartmouth, including Thayer School of Engineering, the Tuck School of Business and Dartmouth Medical School. The conference is titled "Awareness and Enrichment: The Role of Support Staff as Educators." Invitations will be mailed late in June.  Space is limited, and registration will begin on Thursday, July 1.

"There's always a need to learn," said DeeDee Samuels, Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Deans in Student Life and one of the conference organizers. "Our goal is to provide the necessary tools for better communication and collaboration across campus.  Ultimately, all will reap the benefits, including students."

This year's keynote speaker is Annelise Orleck, Associate Professor of  History. According to Connie Bellavance, Administrative Coordinator of  Institutional Diversity and Equity and conference organizer, one of the reasons Orleck was chosen is her expertise on issues of class, race and gender.  Orleck is the author of three books, and she teaches classes in women's and gender studies, Jewish studies and history.

Also on the agenda are a panel discussion about some of the hurdles that minority students and employees face, and a workshop to promote visibility in the workplace.

The conference is sponsored by the Dean of the College, the Dean of the FacultyHuman Resources, the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity, the Office of Student Life and the Office of the Provost.
