Lipson is American Physical Society Fellow

Lipson is American Physical Society fellow

Professor of Chemistry Jane Lipson has been elected as a fellow in the American Physical Society (APS), one of six in the Polymer Physics Division. The fellowship recognizes those who have made advances in knowledge through original research or made significant contributions to the teaching of physics. According to the APS, each year no more than half of one percent of the membership of the society are elected fellow.

Lipson studies polymers, or large molecules. "As a theorist, I try to predict how polymers and mixtures containing polymers behave under different circumstances," she said.

Lipson and the members of her research group use theoretical methods to study the changing physical properties of polymers under a variety of experimental conditions by changing variables such as molecular weight, temperature and pressure.

"We are primarily interested in correlating the microscopic chemical nature of a polymer or small molecule with the bulk behavior of a mixture. Understanding the connections between structure and properties will lead to the design of new materials and also allow us to better exploit the ones we already have. "

A Canadian native, Lipson first worked at Dartmouth from 1984-1986 as a  NATO Science Fellow with Chemistry Professor W.H. Stockmayer. She then accepted an appointment as an Assistant Professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, but returned to Dartmouth the following year as a Visiting Assistant Professor. In 1990 she joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor, became an Associate Professor in 1994 and Professor in 1999.

Her APS Fellow citation reads, "For the insightful use of theory to understand the properties of polymers."
