Take the United Way to heart

Dartmouth campaign ends on Valentine's Day

As of Jan. 20, the Dartmouth United Way Campaign had received gifts and pledges from almost 1,000 individuals in the campus community for a total of $225,403-just 4 percent shy of the campaign's goal of $235,000. "Once again we are proud to have Dartmouth College faculty, staff and students participate in the campaign as such strong partners," said Jim Tonkovich, Executive Director of the Upper Valley United Way. "They are making a substantial contribution towards making life better for so many people in our region."

Dartmouth students, whose participation in the United Way campaign is particularly strong, have raised close to $4,000 of the total amount. Last year, the College's Lambda Rho chapter of  Order of Omega, a national group that honors leadership among students in fraternities and sororities, was recognized by the Northeast Greek Leadership Association as an outstanding chapter for its coordination of the student United Way campaign.

Peter Chalmers '05, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, noted that Order of Omega has taken a special interest in Dartmouth's United Way campaign. He added that students are already planning future activities. "We're thinking about a basketball tournament, a benefit concert, and other things," he said. Chalmers co-chairs Order of Omega's community service committee.

Bill Hochstin, Dartmouth's United Way campus coordinator, said, "I'm grateful to all the members of our community who have made donations and I hope everyone has a chance to contribute before the campaign ends on Valentine's Day." Hochstin is the Director of  Materials Management for Procurement and Auxiliary Services.
