Junior chosen for numerous volunteer activitiesPublished December 1, 2003; Category: STUDENTS Daniel Hui '05 recently won the Student Leader award for the state of New Hampshire from the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA).
NACA is the nation's largest collegiate organization for campus activities, with almost 1,100 member colleges and universities. The Student Leader Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of the region's undergraduate leaders who make a difference at their institutions. In the Northeast division, one student from each of the New England states is chosen for this award. Hui served as co-chair of the Programming Board, a campus organization that hosts events that are both entertaining and educational. He contributed in particular to its advertisements and comedy committees. He said he did not know that he had been nominated for the award. Lena Previll, the coordinator of student programs and advisor to the Programming Board, sent the nomination to NACA's coordinator of the awards banquet. NACA's Regional Leadership Team voted on the nomination, but as is the custom, Hui was not notified of it until after the awards ceremony. When he heard that he had received the award, he was "really surprised, completely shocked," he said. Hui, a native of Middletown, N.Y., serves in Green Key, the junior honor society at Dartmouth, as a student representative of the Dining and Social Commons committee. He is also an ECO (Environmental Conservation Organization) intern, as well as a volunteer tour guide for the Office of Admissions. Hui, a history major, says that the Programming Board is the organization in which he is involved the most. "I can't see myself not involved in it," he said. "The Programming Board is fun, it does so much, and is so encompassing. I just enjoy planning events." BY SHIORI OKAZAKI |
