The Dartmouth figure skating team won its first U.S. National Intercollegiate Figure Skating Team Championship in March in Amherst, Mass., scoring 84 points. The second-place team, from the University of Delaware, scored 65 points, and the third-place team, from Miami University, scored 53 points. "We have a fine group of scholar-athletes here at Dartmouth who are winners both on and off the ice," said J. Michael McGean '49, the team's coach. "Our first qualifying competition win at Princeton last fall was exciting, but to win nationals is the goal and dream of every team." McGean won the World Ice Dance Championship in 1950 with his late wife, Lois McGean. Now his daughter, Loren McGean '92, is assistant coach of the Dartmouth team. Figure skating at Dartmouth is a club sport, so its coaches volunteer their time, and the team is funded through some College funds and through gifts. The championship pitted the team against other club teams and varsity teams.
