The event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Collis Common Ground, will feature lectures and discussions about the science and efforts to address substance use, from cigarettes to alcohol to heroin. Participants will learn about Dartmouth's efforts to address substance use problems through education, research, clinical practice and community outreach. Registration by Friday, April 30, is requested, and registration information and a complete schedule of activities are available online at www.dartmouth.edu/~dcare.
"This landmark event covers many topics of substance use," says Mark McGovern, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and the Director of DCARE. "People who attend will hear about the nationally regarded research occurring at Dartmouth, learn first hand from people providing services, hear about many exciting projects from students and faculty."
The morning session features a keynote address called "Addiction in America" by C. Everett Koop '37, the Elizabeth DeCamp McInerny Professor of Surgery and former U.S. Surgeon General. Other morning presenters will discuss current research initiatives in addiction. Afternoon sessions involve youth substance use, the optimistic prospects for recovery, and the importance of community service.
"We've put together a program that will interest undergraduate students, medical students, faculty, physicians, nurses, counselors, and educators," says McGovern. "Anyone in our community concerned with substance use will benefit from attending this symposium."
The symposium is sponsored by DCARE with support from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Health Services at Dartmouth, The C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth, Dartmouth's Faculty and Employee Assistance Program, and the Department of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School.
