Dartmouth Medical School is hosting a conference called "Doing Good Work in Medicine: Where Excellence and Ethics Meet," drawing on the expertise of education specialists and DMS faculty members and students involved in philanthropic projects.
The half-day conference on Saturday, March 13, will feature a keynote address at 8:30 a.m. jointly delivered by Howard Gardner, the John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (GSE); and Jeffrey Solomon, Research Project Manager at Project Zero, part of the GSE. Gardner will speak about the GoodWork Project, which examines the combination of cutting-edge work and a sense of social responsibility, and Solomon will address how these issues apply to the field of medicine.
The books Good Work: When Excellence and Ethics Meet, by Howard Gardner, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and William Damon; and Making Good: How Young People Cope With Moral Dilemmas at Work, by Wendy Fischman, Becca Solomon, Deborah Greenspan and Howard Gardner, will be available for purchase and autographing at the conference.
A panel discussion will follow at 10:30 a.m. including faculty members and students at Dartmouth Medical School, who will give brief descriptions of their "good works," followed by a discussion involving audience members. Groups of medical students from various DMS organizations will attend the conference and submit reports to Stephen P. Spielberg, Dean of DMS, a week later about specific ways they may incorporate into their work the principles discussed at the conference.
Joseph O'Donnell, Senior Advising Dean and Professor of Medicine, one of the conference organizers, said he hopes "Howard's talk will inform the students about how they might do more good things and have more opportunities to live their values."
The conference is funded by the Blessing Way Foundation, the Community Education Fund and Dartmouth Medical School. It is free and open to the public. For more information call 650-1755.
