10, no. 12, p. 36-40.

INTRODUCTION

Two bibliographies of Guatemalan geology have been previously published: Maldonado-Koerdell, M., 1958, Bibliografia Geologica y Paleontologica de America Central: Instituto Panamericano de Geografia e Historia Pub. 204, Mexico D.F., and Instituto Geografico Nacional, 1966, Bibliografía Geologica de Guatemala, America Central (Hasta 1965).
Several factors have given a great impetus to the volume of material published on the geology of GuatemaIa since 1965. A collaborative geological mapping program between the Instituto Geografico Nacional (now Instituto Geografico Militar) and U.S. universities has produced numerous theses, maps and subsequent investigations by both professors and students, which has continued as former students themselves became professors. Continuous and varied volcanic activity in relatively accessible areas has served as a stimulus for research in volcanology and allied fields. The disastrous 1976 earthquake focused worldwide attention on Guatemala from many disciplines. And the Deep Sea Drilling Project in the Middle America Trench offshore Guatemala has generated numerous publications. Unfortunately, almost nothing of the considerable petroleum exploration effort has been published.
For abbreviations in the text that possibly might not be clear we have included an explanatory listing. The series of numbers in the citations represent in order: volume, number and page. For example: 10, 12, 36-40 indicate vol. 10, no. 12, p. 36-40.
Hispanoil Guatemala, Elf Aquitaine Guatemala, and the Kresge Physical Sciences Library of Dartmouth College have supplied numerous courtesies that have significantly reinforced our bibliographic research. The Department of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth College provided word processing and manuscript preparation services. We wish to thank them all for their gracious help.
