Procedure for generating Outline Maps
To select an area for which you wish to generate an outline
map you must know the latitude and longitude. of the area desired.
These maps show no labels, place names or topographic features
such as volcanoes. In maps of appropriate scale lines of latitude and longitude appear unlabelled . Maps of areas outside the U.S.A. show only coastlines and country boundaries and rivers. whereas those within U.S. show some other features, in particular, major highways.
Scales may be changed at will after the map is generated. Maps of the entire area of a whole volcanic chain may be obtained.
The procedure is
- 1. NOTE WHETHER YOUR DESIRED AREA IS IN U. S. OR NOT..
- 2. CHOOSE ONE OF THE TWO FOLLOWING URLS [ WH ICH ARE URLS FOR TWO EXAMPLES, ONE INSIDE, ONE OUTSIDE U.S.]
URL FOR U.S MAP AREA:
http://pubweb.parc.xerox.com/map/db=usa/color/ht=i/wd=2/lat=19.4/lon=-155.3/ht=5/wd=1
URL FOR OUTLINE MAP AREA NOT IN U.S.:
http://mapweb.parc.xerox.com/map/color=1/features=alltypes/ht=0.60/lat=31.58/lon=130.67/wd=1.20
- 3.MODIFY THE CHOSEN URL BY REPLACING THE lat AND lon NUMBERS IN THE URL USING THOSE OF YOUR DESIRED AREA - TO TWO DECIMAL PLACES IF YOU WISH. FOR A MAP AREA IN SOUTH LATITUDE OR EAST LONGITUDE PRECEED THE LATITUDE OR LONGITUDE NUMBER BY -
- 4.USE THE MODIFIED URL TO GENERATE THE DESIRED MAP. Use the usual method you use to obtian a derired URL on the Web.
- 5. SCROLL TO OPTIONS BENEATH THE MAP TO MODIFY IT. CHANGE SIZE OF AREA AND SCALE AS DESIRED .
These maps show no labels, place names or topographic features
such as volcanoes. In maps of appropriate scale lines of latitude and longitude appear unlabelled Maps of areas outside the U.S.A. show only coastlines and country boundaries and rivers. whereas those within U.S. show some other features, in particular, major .highways. Options allow modifications of legend
Examples:[which will show you how to proceed]
Kilauea, Hawaii, U.S.A. If one has visited Kilauea it will be recognized that the map shows the road which encircles the Halemaumau Crater
Sakurajima, Japan. If one has visited this volcano it will be apparent that the map shows the "island" which is the site of the volcano Sakurajima and the tie to the mainland.
A feature of this map system is that it allows one to point rather generally to the
area on a map of the world it is desired to enlarge,
a particularly useful feature if one wishes to create an outline map
of a large area for which the position of the central point
of the area need not be exact.
