Water level change indicated that the first extrusion (under water) took place Dec. 31, 1879. The volcano first reached the lake surface on Jan. 20th. The island grew to be 50 meters above the lake level and had a diameter of 150 m. Activity ceased in March, 1880. Only five rocky protruberences remain.

One may debate whether this dome in an old prehistoric crater is a new volcano. Similar arguments ny hold for domes at Santorini crater, Greece
