A Little Bit About Us

We enjoy meeting and getting to know students throughout the year. We meet with students to discuss academic advising, personal issues, and college policies. We can provide information about college resources and make referrals as needed. And if you are experiencing academic difficulties, we encourage you to meet with a dean.

Rovana Popoff

Rovana J. Popoff serves as the Dean of Upperclass Students. She works primarily with classes prior to 2008 and with exchange students. She also serves on various campus committees addressing student needs and issues. Arriving in the summer of 2007, Dean Popoff joins Dartmouth College after working many years with the Dean of Students at the University of Chicago.

Teoby A. Gomez

Teoby A. Gomez is Assistant Dean of the College and Dean of the Class of 2009.  He has served as the Dean of the Classes of 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, and 2006.

Dean Gomez advises La Alianza Latina (an organization for Latino students), The Subtleties (an all-female a cappella group),  and the '09 Class Council.  He serves on various campus committees including the Committee on Senior Fellowships, the Council on Libraries, and the Dean of the College Commencement Committee.  Dean Gomez enjoys collegiate and professional sports, Cuban music and jazz, Caribbean beaches, and spending time with his family.

Lisa Thum

Lisa Thum served as an Admissions Counselor and an Assistant Dean in the First-Year Office at Dartmouth prior to becoming one of the Upperclass Deans. She has served as Dean for the Classes of 1992, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2004, and 2007 and currently serves as the Dean for the Class of 2008. Dean Thum has a B.S. in Education and was an undergraduate English major, journalism minor. Her Master's degree is in Counselor Education with an emphasis in higher education. Prior to working in higher education, she spent three years teaching high school English.

At Dartmouth, Dean Thum advises the Decibelles and serves as an advisor and presenter for the Leadership Development Program. Her personal interests include exercise (aerobic and nautilus); travel, especially to Greece and Italy; swimming; water-skiing; cross country skiing; hiking; reading (especially autobiographies, biographies and travel books); cooking; entertaining friends and family; and spending time with her family; partner Carl, and young children, Alexia and Austen.

Kent Yrchik-Shoemaker

Kent Yrchik-Shoemaker is newest Assistant Dean of the College and Dean of the Class of 2010. He has been helping students in a variety of ways for 25 years, the last 19 at Brown University. Dean Yrchik-Shoemaker advises the ’10 Class Council, serves on the Foreign Language Waiver Committee, and is part of the Sophomore Program in the three Fayerweather Residence Halls. He expects to assist members of the ’10 class with their D Plan, selecting a major, and any academic difficulties that may arise. Dean Yrchik-Shoemaker has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and considers himself a Midwesterner due to time residing in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Kansas. He enjoys spending time outdoors with his family on the many hiking trails around Hanover.

Bethanne Tillotson

Bethanne Tillotson came to Dartmouth in 1986 after graduating from Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. In her role as Executive Assistant to the Dean of Upperclass Students, Bethanne works with the Banner student information system, updates and tracks upperclass student records, determines academic standings of upperclass students, facilitates the production and distribution of diplomas, organizes the march order for Commencement, maintains the office website, and handles reporting needs for the Upperclass Deans Office.

Merle Ann Burroughs

Merle Ann joined Dartmouth College in 2005.  She works as a liaison between the Upperclass Deans Office and the Undergraduate Judicial Affairs Office.  Merle Ann enjoys spending time with her family, and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Marilyn Ewing

Marilyn Ewing joined the Upperclass Deans Office in 1999 as Administrative Assistant to Deans Krusi and Langford. She presently assists Dean Thum with the Class of 2008. Marilyn especially enjoys coordinating Transfer Student Orientation and planning small diversity discussion groups. In her spare time she enjoys fly-fishing, sailing and camping with her family.

Colleen Murphy

Colleen Murphy is the Administrative Assistant/Receptionist for the Upperclass Deans Office. Colleen joined the staff in 1999. She enjoys welcoming students, parents and others to the Deans Office.

Katharine Nelson

Katharine Nelson is an Administrative Assistant who joined the Upperclass Deans Office in 2007.

Erika Tillotson

Erika Tillotson is an Administrative Assistant who joined the Upperclass Deans Office in 2008.
