Impeccably crafted and structured, these poems of chaos are contained in neat and beautiful packages. Christopher Davis is a poet through and through, wedded to lyric compression and given to expansive emotional sweeps.
"If Christopher Davis were a painter, his poems might look like the work of Francis Bacon, with gouge marks in the canvas. In syntax often fractured, or blown apart entirely by the poems' jet-fuel mixture of eros and thanatos, A History of the Only War gives us the gorgeous/terrifying language of an exploration that is at once sexual and spiritual, bodily and linguistic." —Jeffrey Skinner
